The Dwarven Mine (Playthrough of Clank! Expeditions: Gold and Silk)

Grief the Thief (great at stealing, awful at coming up with a great nickname) had never tackled a dwarven mine before. He'd stolen from dragons and mummies, gone underground and underwater, and always came away with a pile of riches. Dwarves were well known for guarding their treasure more carefully than any others, but that's what made the job so exciting.

The job paid off within the first few steps. Walking across the threshold into the cavern, Grief's foot kicked something and he heard the sound clanking and clattering across the floor. As he leaned down to pick it up, he say that it was a rub encrusted goblet. "This is going to be very worth it."

This thought stayed in his mind until he heard a much bigger, louder, and more dragon-y sound. I giant black shadow could be rose in the next passage over and Grief hid behind a boulder just before a blast of fire obliterated the spot where he was just standing. He was unscathed and sneaked past the dragon into the depths - his lust for gold overriding his fear of being a barbecued snack for a dragon.

Before venturing into the dwarven mine, Grief had been warned that he should bring a pickaxe in case he came across a raw gold deposit. Well, he was very glad he had listened to that as he turned a corner and came across a giant wall of gold. He carefully chipped away a little bit, being sure not to make too much chose and draw the ire of the dragon again.

If thieves don't practice and get better at their craft, they die. Even on this latest adventure, Grief continued to hone his skills and work on moving more quietly. One wrong stumble and you could fall into a hole or have your barbecue fears mentioned earlier realized.

Two dragon attacks later and Grief was starting to wonder if this was worth it. He was still walking, but he was hurting.

Right as he was seriously considering turning around, his foot came in contact with another goblet. "This is quite the coincidence," he thought, as he pocketed and continued on his way.

His luck seemed to have turned as he found a golden suit of armor, deep in the mine. Giant emeralds adorned the shoulders and the image of a dragon carved out of an even larger emerald rested on the front. This would be worth quite a lot back at the surface.

Surprisingly, Grief came across quite a few other travellers and adventures (and thieves?) in the depths. A Cleric of the Sun had come below to bring light and joy to those stuck in the darkness. Her words of encouragement healed Grief, both body and soul.

Grief knew that he was taking too long underground, he could feel the time flying by. He began to speed up, moving and looking for treasure faster than before. He was rewarded with a much needed healing potion.

All of a sudden, the dragon was upon him again. How could something so large move so quickly and stealthily? He was able to slip himself into a small fissure and escape behind the dragon.

Emerging into a secret room, he came across a terrifying overlord! Using every ounce of dexterity and fighting prowess allowed him to defeat the monster. The adrenaline pumping through his veins allowed him the extra boost of energy he needed to move on quickly before the sounds of battle alerted the dragon to his position.

Someone's royal bodyguard was left down here in the depths. Without a leader to guide them, they were lost. Apparently gold is a good inspiration to choose a new leader and before Grief knew it, the skilled guard was quickly leading him through the paths and tunnels, finding many new treasures on the way.

Apparently the guard was not trained in fighting dragons, however, because two more encounters with the beast left Grief extremely exhausted and wounded.

It was time to go. Using every last bit of strength and reserve, Grief pushed himself and his riches towards the exit.

It would be a long time before he was tempted into a Dwarven mine again. Although, he had heard rumors of a giant spider's lair that held a wealth of riches as well...

*****
This was my first and only playthrough of the new Clank! Gold and Silk expansion. I'll have to give it a few more plays before I do an official review or anything. But here are a few points so far.

  • Adds two new boards with new mechanics: the Dwarven Mine and the Spider's Lair. I only played the Dwarven mine and here's what it added.
    • There are deposits of gold that you can mine by spending 2 skill to get gold. There are bonus points (20, 10, 5) for those who mine the first, second, and third most deposits.
    • There are elevators that drop you right from the top floor to the depths that you can pay (1 gold) the dwarves to let you use. I made use of one of these right at the beginning of the game.
  • Adds a new wooden spider token and new tokens for each of the player colours that are slightly different than the base game. Not a big draw to purchase, but a nice touch.
  • There are no new cards, but I'm ok with that. I already have the Sunken Treasure's and Mummy's Curse expansion, so I have more cards than I know what to do with already!
  • Solo play - I found that the Mummy's Curse expansion did not offer a lot in terms of solo play, but would be much better for multiplayer (the mummy doesn't move much at all in solo play). I feel mostly the same about this first board - the deposits are nice to get some extra gold but you're not competing with anyone to get the most gold dug. I hope they can make better use of both of these expansions with some updates to the app.
All in all a fun experience (gosh, I love playing this game) and I'll keep you updated as I play more.
